These pictures were taken over a 30 minute span in the morning. It was amazing to watch the light move across the sculptured drawer fronts of this mid century piece. Here are the photos (not in chronological order). PIN YOUR FAVORITE!
This Johnson-Carper tallboy was beautiful before I painted the frame except for the formica top which was scratched. So, it was painted in a gray to compliment the veneered drawer fronts.
Process
Sanded the frame then primed with two coats of primer. The only paint I use on mcm pieces is Benjamin Moore Advance because of its self-leveling properties.
Before
If you’re trying to track down information about a particular mid century piece, ask Mr. Modtomic. He will probably have an answer for you.
This piece is available in my etsy shop… but not for long! These types of pieces go fast! SOLD

Martha,
This is another amazing piece. I love how you used the changing light to play on the mcm drawers. Thank you for the advice on the primer. I recently picked up a small piece that has a Formica top & was pondering how to paint over it without it peeling. Have you tried chalk paint on Formica? Would be nice to know if it works as well as the latex with oil primer. Always look forward to your posts!

Hi Judy,
Chalk paint will work on formica. I used it on this piece and it did wonderfully well: http://marthaleonedesign.com/2013/07/22/red-atomic/
I don’t always sand before using chalk paint but I did sand the formica a bit. Thanks for following my blog. I would love to see the finished piece that you refer to in your comment!

Hi Martha! Why 2 coats of primer? I’ve always been curious about the ability to paint formica w/o it scratching off. Please tell!

Hi: I had problems with another mcm piece a while ago and thought that perhaps two coats of primer would eliminate the problem. Here’s a link to the post: http://marthaleonedesign.com/2012/10/25/painted-mid-century-credenza/
I don’t usually do two coats of primer on most pieces. I hope this clarifies. Thanks for the question!
