I can’t get rid of my old Parcheesi game board. All of the plastic pieces are missing but the board, with its bold colors, symmetry of lines and character is a keeper. It became the inspiration for the design I painted on this large dresser. The design wasn’t “literally” picked up from the Parcheesi board. The game board just provided some inspiration for the design. My concept was to combine two unlikely elements: the traditional lines of the dresser with the bold crisp lines and shapes of the parcheesi design. The dresser is transported to new heights when this collision between two disparate things takes place.
Materials used
– Frog tape, regular and delicate (very good for crisp lines)
– Benjamin Moore Advance paint (great paint but needs lots of drying time between coats)
– Sand paper (sanded before applying primer)
– Benjamin Moore All Purpose Primer
– Brasso (used to clean the drawer pulls)
– A very good synthetic paint brush
Process
I sanded then primed the dresser with an oil base primer. Then I drew the design, taped it off, and painted. The type of paint used requires about 16 hours drying time between coats but is worth it.
Lessons learned
– Follow directions on paint cans. The makers of the paint know what they’re doing… if they recommend 16 hours of drying time between coats, be patient and do it.
– The recommendation was to wait for 3-5 days before applying Frog Tape to my painted surface. Because of a deadline I couldn’t wait that long, so I turned to a delicate version of Frog Tape. I was able to tape off my painted surfaces after just 1 day of drying.

The back dresser is really quite lovely and looks very professionally painted! I would like to know if you spray painted the dresser or if not what type of brush you used to get such a smooth finish.
Also your recipe for chalk paint? I am a newbee to your web site!
Thanks for the info!

Really, really nice. I love painted furniture with a twist. And yes, I am also getting tired of the UJ thing. That and chalk paint. Of course, I’ve never used chalk paint so maybe I’ll reserve my thoughts until I do. You did a great job! Very unique!

FYI, you could make your own chalk paint. I’ve been doing that for the past month or so and have grown to love it. I get a very similar effect to Annie Sloan’s paint.

Just WOW, Martha!! The graphics and clean lines are amazing. How in the world did you get that perfect circle with the frog tape? That kind of taping takes me all day!

martha at leonedesign.wordpress.com said:
Hi Joi:
I started out by taping off the circle but as I painted, it seemed better to do it freehand. So part of it was done with tape in place, then I removed the tape and just freehanded it very very slowly!

I have a similar Hepplewhite dresser that I painted all-white for our bedroom. Love what you did with this one. The design is a similar concept to the Union Jack flag designs I see now and then, but this is great for those of us who aren’t big Anglophiles. The colors are so vibrant, and the combination of design and colors really does make this vintage dresser into a modern masterpiece. Great work!

Yeah. It unfortunately resembles some of the UJ flag although there is no conceptual connection. Mine is a take-off of a game board. I love the effort people are making with the UJ but sooo tired of it. I won’t be going there with any of my work. Thanks for the comment!

Ok, this one is cool. I love the game board idea. I kind of missed the Union Jack boat, who knows you may have started a new trend. Maybe I should jump on it before I miss this one too. Thank you for sharing at Furniture Friday.

yeah. wow that union jack idea has been stretched beyond it’s ability to bear it. i might scream a bit if I see another UJ dresser although I totally love the technique and time everyone puts into their dressers as I’m sure they take lots of time. Go for it… get an idea and start a trend!

What a cool and unique design! And I love that you share lessons learned! Aewsome job! … You asked about the finish of paint used for making your own chalk paint. Well, believe it or not, it really makes no difference. Once you mix it with the Plaster of Paris, it will be flat. I often but oops paint and choose by color, not finish. And definitely mix small batches. Like the “real stuff”, it tends to thicken when exposed to air. And all paints mix up a little differently. Have fun and experiment! … Do you know that are a non-reply commentor?

Really fabulous job. It’s a beautiful piece now. Quite a transformation. How did you handle the place on the drawer where the veneer had been chipped off? Did you just use wood filler? Cuz I can’t see at all where that place was on the finished piece. Excellent!
